The Pez Dispenser

Gary Oldman said he was in shock after learning that he had been nominated for best actor for his George Smiley in “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.” He had been passed over in the SAG and Golden Globe nominations, so, he said, “you think, well, maybe it’s not the time.”

When he first heard about the role — he was drinking a cup of coffee in his kitchen when his manager phoned — he had no inkling that it would lead to a career milestone, his first Oscar nomination. “It’s a very strange profession in that sense,” he said. “One minute you have nothing to go to, and you’re out of work, and the next, within a couple of minutes the phone rings, and they want you to do ‘Tinker, Tailor,’ and here I am on the phone with you moments after an Oscar nomination.”

He learned of the nod in an interesting setting: Berlin, where he’s on hand for the film’s German premiere on Tuesday night. “Really, when you think this place was a very sort of the kernel of the cold war, and it was just sort of a mecca for spies,” he said. “I can’t think of a more fitting place to think about a nomination for this film.” [NYT]
