Jean Harlow and Ben Lyon, Hell’s Angels (United Artists, 1930)
Production began in 1927, but when the decision was made to make Hell’s Angels with sound and subsequent change of actresses, much of the film was re-shot. Sequences were hand-tinted and a reel of the film made in two-strip Technicolor. The long-lost color sequence was found in 1989 and is the only known professional color film of star Jean Harlow.
The film lost money in 1930, but with Harlow’s untimely death in 1937, the re-release promoted a profit. Amongst the dialogue was a line for which Harlow became very popular, and which has been quoted in variations throughout the years – “Would you be shocked if I put on something more comfortable?”
